Although he'd just come off those two wins against Shavers and Lyle, I wonder if this was around the time when the many hard fights and tough losses finally caught up with Jerry. Just over a month later he lost badly to a faded Joe Frazier, putting up nothing like the fight he had against peak Joe in 1969. In this fight he again went down, suggesting he was slowing up and losing his punch resistance. In fact, the Alexander fight was the last significant victory of his career. By the time he took the Norton fight, he was an empty shell, taking the fight on 18 days notice.

Can't believe he lost to Ali...twice. But Ali moved around him and he didn't get a chance to use that left. Liston was no match for Ali. After the 2d knock down Liston was in the wrong corner. No wonder he couldn't survive that round. But Harris was game.

I dont think Quarry was underrated he was a top contender that wasnt quite at the elite level. He didnt have all the gifts that the elite had but the fans understood that he would give his all. Very similar to George Chuvalo. Sad he paid dearly for being such a warrior

You could just FEEL the weight of Liston’s punches ending in those lunchboxes he had for hands-unbelievable build for fighting and good head movement…I disagree with the commentator that Listons style was to ‘take two to give one’. Very underrated as a boxer-he WASNT just a monstrous puncher-he had legit boxing skills.

In truth he was concealing that he was suffering from hardening of the heart muscle before he died, he also was suffering from a fatal undisclosed lung disease that he kept out of the public eye for a couple of decades. When the doctors told him it would've progressively gotten worse and potentially fatal at around 1950, Liston would go on alcoholic binges, he swore he would never go to a doctor again, because they would've just advised him to quit sooner.

THE classic example of a fighter that was protected and didn't need to be. He went 13 rounds with a prime Larry Holmes. Should have been no shame but so much was put on him, mainly because he was white. Gerry could fight and he could hurt whatever he hit. But after becoming the number one contender, they stalled him. He could have been a champion.
